Mary Doyle and her husband James came to Austin in 1840 and became leading members of early Austin society. They were devout Catholics who helped support the founding of St. Mary's Cathedral. As a widow in 1872, Mary Doyle sold most of her large estate to Father Edward Sorin for a fraction of its value on the condition that the land be used for "the establishment of a college, school, or other educational institution."
